The covering letter you attach your CV to can be critical
to whether the reviewer even looks at your CV. If it fails to make a
strong impact on them, they will approach reading your CV with their mind
in a less receptive mode.
To ensure your covering letter is effective consider these
questions:
-
Is my covering letter too long? The letter should be
no more than one side of A4 paper.
-
Does my covering letter get my key skills across clearly
and quickly? The letter will act as a headline for your CV, so it is
important to ensure that it presents some evidence that you possess the
key 2 or three skills being asked for in the Job Advert or Job
Description.
-
Have I used clear and concise language in my covering
letter. It is important not to write in a flowery, over formal way
when you write a covering letter. Try to be business like and brief,
but avoid over familiarity, jargon, jokes or humour, as these may not
impress the reviewer.
-
Is my covering letter impressive in appearance? If
you want to hand write the covering letter, make sure your writing is
clear and legible. Even if you are handwriting, try word processing
first to get your thoughts in order, then transcribe. This will cut
down time and avoid errors. Most reviewers prefer to receive a word
processed document. Indeed, most now prefer to receive any
correspondence from the candidate by email.
