The art of interviewing has improved over the past few years.  Whereas interviews used to be relatively unscripted, almost casual, they have become far more controlled and structured.  Interview techniques like competency based interviewing, targeted interviewing technique and criteria based interviewing have made the interview a much more effective method of finding out if the candidate is the right person for the job.

• Whatever method the interviewers use, they will be looking for evidence, from you, in the form of stories which you can recount in detail about how you have used a skill or capability.

• To prepare yourself to answer these questions, think about the skills and/or experience detailed in the job advert or job description and think about events or situations in your career where you have demonstrated the skill.

• It’s worth taking some time to write out a brief story about how you tackled the situation as this will help you to make sure your answers are reasonably brief, but don’t miss out important evidence.
