If you don't plan for what you want... ... you are likely to get something else...

Job hunting is like any other activity.  The more work you put into it, the more you get out.

Be Selective

Unless you are absolutely desperate for cash, be very selective about which roles you apply for.  If you apply for every job going, you will:

  • Be spending a lot of time chasing jobs you really don't want.

  • Not be very convincing in job interviews, because the fact that you are applying for something that, in your heart-of-hearts, you are not interested in will come across to the interviewers.

So, if you are currently in a job, or have time and/or money to live on for a while, carefully select the jobs you go for.  This is definitely a situation where less is more.

Plan

For every opportunity you decide to go for, create a little plan for your campaign.

  • How are you going to respond to the advert?

  • Where do your skills match the job requirements?

  • Does your CV reflect the requirements of the job and is it up to date?  See our 7 rules of CV Writing for help with this.

  • Are you prepared for any interview?  See our Interview Support page for help and advice on this.

Keep Records

Make sure that you keep records of all the jobs you have applied for, and what stage they are at.  This will ensure that when you respond to an interview request, you can quickly do your research and preparation.
