The 7 Rules of CV Writing...  Follow these rules and your CV will stand a much better chance of getting you an interview...

When you write your CV there are 7 rules which it is very important to apply:

  1. Your CV will be reviewed by someone who will probably be reading tens, sometimes over a hundred CV’s. You need to make their task as easy as possible. You also need to make sure your CV stands out. If you don’t, unfortunately, they just won’t read it.

  2. Think about how the document flows. Does your CV transition smoothly from subject to subject. Is it an easy read for the reviewer. Consider the content and layout of your CV and ensure it facilitates easy reading.

  3. Information that is not relevant to the role you are applying for is redundant and a waste of valuable space. You have to keep the CV to the lowest number of pages possible, whilst ensuring that it sells you effectively. If you make the reviewer ‘mine’ for the information they are looking for amongst a pile of irrelevant details, they are less likely to read your CV thoroughly.

  4. Try to ensure that your CV sells your skills and achievements as fully as possible. Remember, it is no longer just a career history. It is your sales brochure.

  5. Make sure you account for any career gaps. Don’t worry too much if you have gaps in your career. Organisations and reviewers are much less concerned about career gaps these days. Just don't leave unexplained gaps in dates.

  6. Check, check and re-check the content. Think about it, if there are even small errors in your CV, what does that say about you as a prospective employee.

  7. Keep the format simple. Many people get carried away when they are creating their CV. They want it to stand out, so they use complicated and attractive layouts, colour text, pictures and multiple fonts. Remember, you need to make reading your CV as easy as possible for the reviewer.

Sometimes a layout that looks great on your PC looks terribly jumbled on someone else’s. So, stick to a simple format, using minimal styles and fonts. Arial is a good font to use.
